This is a unique gastronomic event throughout the Czech Republic. You will find out all the different ways that blueberries can be prepared; some products are really unique and will surprise you. If you feel in shape there is a funny eating competition to see how many blueberry dumplings are you able to eat.
The town Borovany lies 17 kilometers from České Budějovice. Its history dates back to the 12th century and is connected with the families of the Vítkovci, Rožmberkové, Švamberkové, Habsburkové and Schwarzenbergové. Every year in July there is a unique gastronomic and cultural event called Borůvkobraní, during which everything revolves around blueberries. At Borůvkobraní, a yeast
blueberry dumplings and cake eating competitions take place as well as the world championship for catching blueberries in the mouth. Local restaurants draw blueberry beer and pour blueberry liqueur and brandy, and of course a blueberry menu is served. At the craft fair, you can buy blueberry jams, pancakes, cakes, and much more. The event is accompanied by examples of folk traditions and folklore.
How to get there?
- Several bus lines run from the bus station in České Budějovice to the town of Borovany. These buses have a stop near the square in Borovany so it is very close to the monastery areal where this event is held. You can also reach Borovany by train from České Budějovice (direction České Velenice). Trains on this track belong to the most modern, however, the railway station is not located comfortably so it is necessary to walk and follow red tourist signs.
